Hitting A Wall

Posted by Fatty Founder on June 2, 2013 with No Comments

I think everyone hits a wall. But this is a blog about my walls. My big, giant, weight loss stopping walls. I hate walls. Well, not the walls that keep my dog from running away, or keep thieves from breaking into my house, or a wall that keeps people in prison because I don’t want them breaking into my house or stealing my dog. But walls that keep me from losing weight.

I’m hard on myself. I push myself and I fight with myself to do better, be stronger, eat healthier, run faster, be smarter (this isn’t a blog about my brain, but occasionally I try to be witty on here and a big brain helps). And there are times when all the work in the world doesn’t make your belly flatter or your butt smaller. These are my methods for working through it:

1. Yell, scream, curse, get it all out- then get over it. BUT- don’t stop. Keep doing. I think “this isn’t working! Why isn’t it working. I work so hard it isn’t f@##^@#!%^^^ working!” And I know if I stop- I go back to super fatty and not “fit” included. I’m hard on myself, and then I get over it. And I work my butt off another day.

2. Do what you love. Even if there’s not fat dropping off in the butt-loads (literally)- loving the gym makes you interested in going. I love the classes I take: Pump, CX, Attack, Combat. Even if I don’t want to exercise, and don’t feel like going to the gym, I go because I enjoy it. And because I’ve been consistent in going, I’ve met multiple other gym obsessed people who know me (and may, or may not- probably not, love me).

3. Make friends at the gym. There are people there who take me to task for missing days, encourage me on Facebook, and that I look forward to seeing when I go. They cheer me on, comment on my fitness posts on Facebook, and promote my blog (all of you- PROMOTE MY BLOG!!) And if I miss a week, they may send someone to check on me and make sure I didn’t exercise myself to death. . .

4. Reassess when you hit a wall. Try something new- a new class at the gym, lift more weight, make a diet change. Sometimes shaking things up is what you need to get out of a rut. And shaking that butt will help you lose that butt (I need some of it for sitting, but I have way more then necessary- so some of it can go).

5. Don’t take into account only pounds lost. I take my measurements once a month, and I take pictures every few months. And does a picture tell a thousand pounds. Well, not a thousand. If I weighed a thousand pounds I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be writing a fitness blog, I’d be writing a blog on competitive eating. A scale tells me the pounds lost, and a measurement will tell me inches lost, but a picture shows. . . well, the whole picture. It shows my biggest changes, and combines them all in a history for me to see. And my Facebook friends to see. . . for bragging rights.

So hit your walls, and then bust through them. Inspire yourself. . . or just talk big, brag, and puff yourself up until its true. Like I’ve said before “May this inspire you to do great things. Or at least average things with great melodrama- like me.”

Wanna see my muscular core? (me too!) CX Works

Posted by Fatty Founder on May 28, 2013 with No Comments

CX Works is a core class that works my midsection. . . well, to the core. You may be saying “why do I need a class just for my midsection? Why not take Body Pump where every muscle group is covered?” First off- why are people always demanding things of me on my blog? Stop being jerks. And second of all- back off, its my blog. AND a core class is a huge help for life in general.

Your core is the support system for your whole body. It helps support your spine, and everything attached to it . . which is pretty much everything. It isn’t just your abs, but your back as well. Pretty much all the muscles on your torso. And really, I want awesome abs, but a nice back and butt to match those nice abs keeps me in business. . . and by business I just mean living. . . I’m pretty sure my husband would be unhappy with me wearing nothing everywhere I go to show off my “core”.

Now, for the basics of CX works: its a half hour class that will kick your butt- literally and figuratively. Now, a half hour may not seem like a lot. You may be thinking “a half hour, how is THAT a workout?”. WHY DO YOU KEEP ASKING ME QUESTIONS? IT’S MY BLOG. But before you judge the short time period- do it. You’ll be shocked at how impossible it is, and how that half hour is all you need to make you throw up a little.

Usually the class starts with a warm up of crunches, toe taps, planks, bicycles, and exercises meant to get you ready for unadulterated torment. Many of the tracks that follow involve the same familiar forms of torture: planks (get on your forearms, and rest on your knees or toes, keep the back flat, shake like crazy, pray you don’t die), crunches, and bicycles (knees above hips, calves parallel to the floor, kick one leg out, twist up and touch elbow to the opposite knee- feel like your abs will burst through your tummy and run for cover). But there are also tools used to tone the back, butt, and chest that are not used in other classes. An exercise band (a giant rubber band with handles on it) is used to work your back and butt. Its used to create resistance when walking, squatting, kicking, and pulling to work the arms. Think of it as something that seems fun, but will make you hate it with every breath because it mostly sucks. . .

CX works does amazing work in 30 minutes. That doesn’t mean it’s easy, and it doesn’t mean you won’t feel like your entire torso will rattle free. But it will give you an amazing core. . . even if mine is muscular but well insulated so you will never, ever see those abs.

Fatty Loves Pump

Posted by Fatty Founder on May 20, 2013 with No Comments

Body Pump is the first exercise class I ever did- a barbell weight lifting class. Why is it that I took so long to write about it if I’ve been doing it so long? First of all- back off, its my blog. Secondly- I worry I may not do it justice. It’s the class that gives me my currently “hot and buff” body (AKA- my fatty fit form). It’s the class that let me meet new people, and build great relationships. AND- its the one class I take that involves no running, kicking, or burpees (as of yet)- so that gets me excited. And it gave me a huge confidence boost (which I didn’t really need because I’m awesome).

I have had some of the best instructors for this class EVER. The first class I took was with Caroline. She was the one who started me off on form and weight. She was able to “ease me in” to a weight lifting way of life. Once I started working full time, I needed to change up my workout schedule (damn you life and bills getting in the way of my workouts!!). I started then taking classes with multiple, amazing instructors: Trina, Brandy, Troy, Mandy, and Opal. And after a full year or doing Pump, I realized it was time to get my butt in gear.

Now, I by no means can bench press 350 pounds. And really, Body Pump deals in lots of repetitions, and less weight. And my flabby, girly arms can only take so much. But it allows me to control the weight I use. And pushing myself is what matters. I add weight as I feel that I can make the jump. Once a track seems less impossible that it was the class before, its time to up the weight to make it once again illogical. And up it I do.

My legs have always been the size of small children. And adding weight on those has been my greatest improvement. In middle school and high school, I did weekly horseback riding lessons. And holding on for dear life with my knees gave me some powerful thigh muscles and calves of steel. Getting those back was a big goal of mine. And now I surpass almost everyone on squat weight- sometimes even the instructors. Don’t ever challenge me to a leg war- I will own you.

Classes cover each muscle group. You start with a quick warm up, move to squats to get those legs, then chest, back (upper and lower), triceps, biceps, lunges (more legs!), shoulders, abs, and then stretches. Yes, you do 2 sets of leg exercises- squats AND lunges. “Why do I need to do 2 sets of legs?!” you may ask. Stop being lazy and just do it you big complaining baby. But, I guess I’ll answer your question because you’re crying about it. I really feel the squats on the front of my legs, where as I feel lunges on the backs of my legs and in my butt. This is what the experts say (AKA Livingstrong.com): “The main muscles that are worked during lunges are the quadriceps, but the calves, glutes and hamstrings are also engaged. Squats engage the same muscle groups in addition to the lower back”. http://www.livestrong.com/article/343944-which-are-better-squats-or-lunges/ So that’s why you do 2 sets of legs. Now quit your kvetching (that’s right, I’m going Yiddish on you) and get to work!

Now, Body Pump also offers some Cardio mixed in. Lunge tracks usually include multiple fun things that make you hate life: jump lunges (go into a lunge, then bring the back leg up and hop on the front leg), lunges on your bench, and jumps off and on your bench (the new, super fun idea that the newest Body Pump has given us). This really elevates your heart rate, and gives you the extra calorie burn needed to eat that ice cream and pasta that makes life worth living.

So as a work out class goes, Body Pump is the one class I would demand if stuck on a deserted island (although it would no longer be deserted if I demanded an entire class of people come entertain me). It started me on the path of exercise class excellence- and gave me the chance to entertain millions with my amazing blog. Well, by entertain I mean annoy, and by millions I mean the whole 10 people I know.

Fatty Body Combat

Posted by Fatty Founder on May 16, 2013 with No Comments

What could be more fun than someone who’s uncoordinated and overweight pretending to fight? Well, besides WATCHING someone who’s uncoordinated and overweight pretending to fight? That’s pretty much my summary of me attempting Body Combat. It combines multiple martial arts, as well as boxing and kickboxing, into a class that makes you feel (well ME feel) uncoordinated and overweight. BUT- it burns calories and tests your strength, so it isn’t all bad. And I keep going back, so I guess I’m a glutton for punishment.

Working on fighting form in this class is what matters. Being more precise with your punches works your muscles, and you can feel that you’re working more areas then you would while attempting wimpy, girly-man punches. And of course punching hard and making contact in the right areas is what matters when fake-fighting with no one.

Legs are also a big part of this class. The trainers who develop Les Mills’ programs feel that balancing on one leg will be entertaining (mostly for them, not for me). So working on multiple side kicks, front kicks, back kicks, roundhouse kicks, and whatever other touch your toe to your nose while doing backflips kicks they can force you to do while balancing on one leg, will be a big part of this class. And the leg you are balancing on will feel like it’s on fire, while the one you are kicking with will feel like it will fall off. And that’s fun.

Now, for the ladies out there, I will warn you: Men almost always develop these classes. Because no woman in her right mind would think “know what would be fun? Jumping! Because nothing is better than jumping up and down multiple times so every pound of fat on me jiggles. And getting hit in the face by my boobs- bonus!!”. Jumping jacks, jump kicks, and multiple other jump torture devices are implemented in this class. BUT- they work.

I enjoy Body Combat a great deal. You may not have guessed that by my review of said class, but I have a great time. 60 minuets of me getting all my aggression out is what I need after a tough work day, or to prepare me for the zombie apocalypse. Picturing someone you dislike in front of you while practicing punches and kicks can cheer a girl right up. I usually burn 700 to 800 calories in a class, and that ain’t bad. And who doesn’t want to fake fight with no one for an hour each week?

Fatty Foodie Chicken Recipe

Posted by Fatty Founder on May 16, 2013 with No Comments

Those of you who read my last installment of Fatty Foodie know I love, love, LOVE spicy food. I made this dish with habanero peppers because it does make me sweat and cry. I try and make all my lunches for the week Sunday night so that I don’t have to worry about finding time each night to make something healthy. And if I cook it, I know what’s in it.

My review:
5 stars on spicy- Using the habanero peppers made it perfect for me. It was a 10 out of 10 on my sweat and cry scale.
I put the chicken over brow rice, and that made it a very filling, well rounded meal. I will definitely make it again.

My rating- A dish that’s healthy and doesn’t taste like something your grandma forced you to eat as a child.

Spicy Chicken with Broccoli

Ingredients

15 ounces chicken breast tenders (not breaded)
2 teaspoons flour
1/2 teaspoon salt (I didn’t use any salt)
1/4 teaspoon white pepper
1 pound broccoli
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 hot fresh green chili, cut into very thin slices (I used habanero peppers)
2 tablespoons brown bean sauce
2 teaspoons finely chopped garlic
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon finely chopped gingerroot (I didn’t have any, and I omitted it)

Directions

1. Mix chicken, cornstarch, salt and white pepper in medium bowl. Cover and refrigerate 20 minutes.

2. Peel outer layer from broccoli. Cut broccoli lengthwise into 1-inch stems; remove flowerets. Cut stems diagonally into 1/4-inch slices. Place broccoli flowerets and stems in boiling water; heat to boiling. Cover and cook 1 minute; drain. Immediately rinse with cold water; drain.

3. Heat wok or 12-inch skillet over high heat. Add oil; rotate wok to coat side. Add chili, brown bean sauce, garlic, sugar and gingerroot; stir-fry 10 seconds. Add chicken; stir-fry about 2 minutes or until chicken is no longer pink in center. Add broccoli and onions; stir-fry about 1 minute or until broccoli is heated through.

Finding Your Fatty Fan

Posted by Fatty Founder on May 10, 2013 with No Comments

I have lost weight. I’m not where I want to be yet, but I’m on a mission to do it. Along the way I have met great people who cheer me on and encourage me to do great things, support me and love me (and, honestly, this blog is my forum to toot my own horn, put wind in my own sails, and look pretty darn awesome- but enough about how great I am). But there will always be people who don’t want you to do well. Who need all the attention placed on them and can’t be happy for anyone else. Who will act like anything you do isn’t all that great. We all know people like this. Its hard to deal with people like that. But I know that sometimes I need to be my own cheerleader. And I’m not good at it. So these are my rules on how to inspire yourself to greatness (or at least inspire yourself to THINK you have done great things):

1. Don’t criticize yourself. I am a criticize queen- I can be pretty hard on myself. Step back and say “I didn’t lose the weight I wanted, BUT I did more weight on squats, I did more time on the treadmill, I did Body Combat AND Body Attack- and LIVED”. It’s easy to be mad about the number on the scale not budging, and the size of my butt staying. . . large. But its hard to look at the big picture and say “this week, I was awesome. I did great”.

2. You won’t always be good at things. I love Combat. I’m falling in like with Body Attack. But there are mirrors in the classrooms. . . mirrors everywhere. I know I look silly. But I look silly with confidence. And I notice people watching me, and copying my moves. So apparently looking confident in my incapability makes other people confident in ME. . . And adds to “toot my own horn” time on my blog. Yeay me.

3. Love what you do. Hate running? Don’t do that. Try the elliptical. Hate the elliptical? Try boxing, kicking, or Body Combat. Hate martial arts? Try the Wii or Kinect. Hate all that? Why are you reading a fitness blog and submitting yourself to exercise talk? That’s what a crazy person does.

4. Talk yourself up. Sometimes thinking you’re awesome is all you need to BE awesome. You may not feel confident, but saying “I WILL do this. I WILL be better than last week” will make it so. And just thinking, at the end of the day “I did so much better on ______” or “I really improved in ______” gives you that boost.

5. When someone talks down your achievements, you should handle their insensitivity with style and grace. Wait until they leave, talk badly about them behind their backs, turn everyone to your side, discover their phobia, then leave snakes or rats (or whatever freaks them out) in their car. No, I’m just kidding. . . kind of. Many times, I try to remember that people who are unkind have many issues of their own. Maybe they’re unhappy with their own weight. Maybe they think giving you compliments will make you full of yourself. Or maybe they just have terrible social skills. Whatever the reason, people who blurt out cruel things. . . suck. Just don’t let them make you doubt your dedication and amazingness (yeah, I made my own word. Its my blog- back off).

6. Write a blog. Make people read it. Tell them you’re amazing. Toot your own horn. Or don’t. Because it won’t be as good as my blog. My blog is awesome. No one wants to compete with this awesome blog. Make others read my blog. You can say “I write a fitness forum, check it out” and give them my page. Then take credit for it. Hey, a read is a read. And I’m entertaining. Do it.

Class Etiquette

Posted by Fatty Founder on May 8, 2013 with No Comments

This post will most likely sound like an old lady curmudgeon (word of the day- it means a bad tempered person, usually referring to a grumpy old coot), but people today have no manners. It seems that this has become the time, the place, and the FORUM to post my rules on gym etiquette. These are my rules:

1. If I’m in the locker room changing, don’t talk to me. Chatty Cathy wants to talk shop while skipping around in her birthday suit? Denied. Take the naked singing elsewhere. It creeps me out.

2. When I put my stuff down, and get set up- DON’T TOUCH MY STUFF. I have had people move my gym bag to take my spot, take my weights once I’ve put them down, and put their stuff on the bench I just set up. This makes me angry. And you won’t like me when I’m angry. . . because I silently walk away, sulk, look sad, and pout. I may even point a finger of judgement at you. . . when you aren’t looking. . . because I hate confrontation.

3. Don’t sweat on me. Seriously, that’s gross. If you are going to be kicking, punching, spinning, twirling, falling, or dying near me- keep your sweat to yourself. I have a severe aversion to having strangers fling bodily fluids on me.

4. Women of the gym world: yes, yoga pants are cute. And you want to fill them out- shoot. But could you please, please invest in seamless underwear? And if you like short shorts, go for it. But buy underwear that goes UNDER short shorts. I like Victoria’s Secret the same as the next girl, but it should NOT be Victoria Public every time you squat and lunge in front of me.

Body Attack

Posted by Fatty Founder on May 5, 2013 with No Comments

For the first time ever, this week I took Body Attack. For those of you who are saying “what in God’s name is Body Attack?”, I’ll explain. Its a 60 minute class in which 50 minutes of said class is used to try and kill you. A friend once described it as “Jane Fonda on crack”. I love Body Combat (a mixed martial arts class), and people who love that class told me to try Body Attack (I am planning to hunt those people down and leave flaming poo bags on their porches). So I submitted myself to something new, and tried this class.

As a form of torture, I would say this class rates a 10. With jumping lunges (yeay, now my legs and feet feel like flaming sacks of what I’m leaving on my “friends'” porches), burpees (let me explain- squat down and put your hands next to your feet so you look like a frog, jump back into a plank, now jump up as high as you can, repeat. Do as fast as you can 8 billion times), then run in circles until you vomit. Repeat. At the end of the class, I had burned close to 750 calories (I have a heart rate monitor that tells me what I did).

We’ve all heard the saying “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results”- but I plan to do this class over and over. But if my blog comes to a sudden end, it means this class has killed me. . . or one of my “friends” caught me leaving flaming poo on their doorstep.

Fatty Foodie

Posted by Fatty Founder on May 3, 2013 with No Comments

I love food.  I mean, look at me- food is awesome.  Food is fuel, it gets me through my workouts, but I also want it to taste delicious.  Not like cardboard.  And I have tried different diets.  Atkins (no bread killed it), The grain-free diet (no grains=no bread, killed it), and the Paleo diet (what is it with you people and no bread??!!)- none stuck with me.  But I do have food advice, and here it is:

1. For those of you who know me, you may know that I like my food spicy.  But not just a little kick in the pants spicy.  I mean so hot you sweat and cry spicy- this is also how I like multiple other things in my life, but this isn’t a forum on Angela’s personal life.  One thing spices do for me is slow me down- eating slower helps me recognize I’m full before I overdo it, and I savor my meal.  Yes, SAVOR.  According to a study by Purdue University (yeay smart people!!) capsaicin, the component that gives chili peppers their “kick”, can reduce hunger and burn more calories.   Wanna read about it?  http://www.purdue.edu/newsroom/research/2011/110425MattesPepper.html  One of the things they did say is the more you do it, the less effective it becomes.  So I’ll just keep upping my dose to kick my butt!

2.  I love foods that are the bane of dieters everywhere- candy, ice cream, anything fatty, etc.  I’m logical about these things.  I don’t cut myself off from anything- but I don’t keep it in my house either.  I know I’ll eat a whole bag of candy if I have it, so I don’t keep it where I can eat it for every meal every time.  I enjoy things in moderation, and I can stop myself if it isn’t there to stuff my face with.  All things in moderation.

3.  I snack.  I have a morning snack, an afternoon snack, and sometimes a bedtime snack.  At 4 years old I was diagnosed as a Type 1 diabetic.  Being insulin dependent (translation= i need to give myself insulin injections because I don’t produce any insulin on my own), I was put on a strict diet to help control my blood sugars.  Going too long without food makes my sugars crash, and eating too much makes them spike.  If I have a snack in between breakfast and lunch, I won’t eat an entire tub of Crisco, or drink a class of delicious liquid sugar.  It helps keep my blood sugars steady, and me less grumpy (not completely, 100% happy- what’s life without a little sarcasm and self-deprecating?).

4.  I count my calories.  I write them down, and I total out what I eat each day.  I can see patterns, and target when I overdo things.  I know how many calories I burn in a day, and if I ate more than that I know I have to burn it off.  It’s humbling, but it helps me stay honest.

5.  If I love a food, and there’s a more healthy version, I try and switch it out.  I like pasta, so I do whole wheat to get the fiber.  Rice- why not brown rice?  There are also small switches you can make in baking.  Applesauce instead of oil when baking (not always, but it’s an option), plain yogurt instead of sour cream- small changes that cut calories.  But there are also things that I will not do.  Banana in anything?  No, that’s disgusting.  Give up meat and do “soy steak”?  What do I look like- a non-bathing hippy?  Some things are better the original way.

Fit Foundations

Posted by Fatty Founder on May 2, 2013 with No Comments

A year and a half ago, I walked into Gold’s Gym the heaviest I had ever been.  For 8 years, through middle and high school, as well as college, I took belly dancing, rode and showed my horse, and participated in different sports.  My senior year I walked/jogged a marathon (well, 25 miles, but that’s a whole different story).  I walked everywhere in college, and was able to work off whatever I ate.  But about 3 years ago, I started having complications with my type 1 diabetes- and exercise was off the table (BUT everything else was ON the table).  I started gaining weight, and it was happy to stay. After changing doctors, I was able to finally exercise again.  And so it began.

Being unemployed, I was able to spend a great deal of time at the gym.  I started taking different classes (Body Pump- a weight lifting barbell class), Turbo Kick (a kickboxing/boxing class with a high intensity Turbo section), and Body Combat (a mixed martial arts class).  These classes, and my new gym friends, helped me drop 35 pounds.  This is my blog, a story about my weight loss journey, a set of goals to lose more, and my adventures along the way.
